Monção is a Portuguese village in the Viana do Castelo district, in the North and in the Alto Minho sub-region, with about 3 535 inhabitants.
It is the seat of a municipality with an area of ​​211.31 km² and 19 230 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 24 parishes ( Abedim; Anhões e Luzio; Barbeita; Barroças e Taias; Bela; Cambeses; Ceivães e Badim; Lara; Longos Vales; Mazedo e Cortes; Merufe; Messegães, Valadares e Sá; Monção e Troviscoso; Moreira; Pias; Pinheiros; Podame; Portela;
Riba de Mouro; Sago, Lordelo e Parada; Segude; Tangil; Troporiz e Lapela; Trute).
The municipality is limited to the north by Salvaterra do Minho (Spain) and Arbo (Spain), to the east by the municipality of Melgaço, to the south by Arcos de Valdevez, to the southwest by Paredes de Coura and to the west by Valença.
The highest point of the municipality at the top of S. António de Vale dos Poldros, with 1,114 meters of altitude, in the parish of Riba de Mouro.
It is located two kilometers from the Spanish municipality of Salvaterra de Miño, to which it is connected by a bridge over the river Minho.

Climate
Monção has a Mediterranean climate of the Csa type but on the border with Csb, that is, with hot summers but which does not differ much from the version of mild summers. Days with more than 30 ºC occur with some frequency, about 40 per year on average, and the summers are drier than the rest of the seasons but less than in the rest of Portugal. Winters are relatively cold and rainy, with days below 0 ºC rarely occurring, about 8 per year.
